Question What takes your mind off of P? - 07-16-2008, 01:45 AM
Hi,

Since we students live a life that is different than that which people with dayjobs live. I think there must be things that help us take our mind off of P and resist watching it the might not work for others.

Personally, I find that prayer, physical activity and studying are my main distractions from P. But they rarely take up all of my time. In fact, not even most of it.
So I was wondering what other things a student could do to keep his/her mind off of P?

Thanks,
DA

Playing an instrument is good, actually anything arty works well, painting, drawing, pottery. Whatever takes your fancy

Thanks for this thread! I'll post back when I have a few more ideas!

Best wishes,

Ben

My husband, though in his late twenties at the moment, does things like play video games, read, and play with gas powered RC cars...for those of you that like to tinker the rc car thing is detailed and fairly inexpensive, and there are huge groups of rc car enthusiasts that get together on a regular basis for races, modification "parties" to trick them out, and there are contests. If you're competitive that is a fun way to enjoy your hobbie. I'm only the spouse of a PA, but I think advise that works well for other addictions will work well here. I agree with Vorlan with anything artsy, being an artist myself, because it's a proven fact that self expression through any form of art is theraputic. Even if you just sit and draw and never show them to anyone. We could take the music part to the next step, if you just can't fathom playing an instrument, combine music and games with guitar hero...I think music is theraputic too and in my opinion the detailed consentration needed to play that game helps to divert your focus. Just my two cents, hope this helps. I do worry though with sugesting video games as a diversion, there is a fine line you must draw because it is very easy to get sucked into that world too. Been there done that myself, I'm a few months WOW free, /amen

Best of luck

Thanks a lot for the ideas. I have a a theory that my artistic side is non-existant, but I might as well give art a try. I mean, the time it will take is time away from P and that's good.
Also, the RC car suggestion sounds great. I always wanted one when I was a kid, but I guess I just forgot all about it through the years. That is going on my to buy list.
But the video games are not for me, they're another thing I sometimes get hooked on. Good luck to you Searching4peace in getting WOW free. That game was the reason a friend of mine dropped out of school . I hoep it hasn't done you any harm.

Peace

Very sensible post there,ThisWontBeMeFor me, it would be art, although like dark, I'm not very good at it. I'm not very good in drawing or singing, but if storywriting can be considered an art form, then I guess I am an artist as well. Other things would be spending time here on TTF, reading or taking long walks.

Default Elastic band - 09-16-2008, 07:13 PM
Attach a elastic band to your wrist. If you feel amorous pull on the band and let go. You will soon 'snap' out of it

There are many things that can positively influence you and take your mind off P. My favorites are as follows:

- Spending quality time with loved ones. Nothing can replace smile of those whom we love most, nothing...
- Inspirational, focused reading.
- Interaction with learned people and meaningful conversations that usually follow.
- Observing nature. Breeze in the trees is priceless, but to feel it as such, one needs clear, sharpened senses (something that P burns).
- Art (Graphic design, making posters)
- Chess. Amazing way of putting your fight on the board in a more abstract, bloodless, way. You can imagine that the black (evil) figures represent demons inside us, whilst the white ones correspond to our, essentially good, nature.
- Table tennis. Again, a way you can abstractly put yourself in dominant position against the urge. Ping-pong ball (urge) is very small in comparison to our rackets (our will).

So much for now.
