Default Scriptural Support for Sexual Recovery

I've been meaning to create a thread to hold the passages from Scripture supporting those endeavoring to recover...

I will add as I am reminded in my reading (and listening -thanks to my new Bible app! o:-)).

If you know of some or want to add, PM me and I'll put them in.

      Daniel

The hour has come for you to wake up from your slumber, because your salvation is nearer now than when we first believed.

The night is nearly over; the day is almost here.

So let us put aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light.

Let us behave decently, as in the daytime, not in orgies and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and debauchery, not in dissension and jealousy.

Rather, clothe yourself with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the flesh.

      Romans 13:11-14

      Thumbs up Paul's Tongue-twister!

      New International Version
      From Romans 7

      (read with a little speed
and you’ll experience why I label this
      a “tongue-twister”! o:-))

“I do not understand what I do
For what I want to do I do not do,
but what I hate I do
For I have the desire to do what is good,
      but cannot carry it out
For what I do is not the good I want to do
No, the evil I do not want to do – this I keep doing.”

:-"Do be do be do . . .:-"

For me, this passage is about POWERLESSNESS.

For me, as a SO of a PA for the second time, I am powerless!
Powerless over my explosive reactions - I just can’t stop myself!
Powerless over MY anger and disappointment at myself:
the shame I feel over a second marriage to a PA,
the embarrassment over my own enabling behaviors,
the guilt over isolating myself so that I do not become
the liar when someone asks me
how I am and I say “fine”,
the hurt at feeling like I am “not enough”
the sadness simply over this whole stinkin’ thing

      But I am recovering!

Paul’s words above didn’t end there.
Nor does my story end with the powerlessness!
I sense hope returning and building.
Hope as something real, not just a word.

      Thanks be to God!

      Proverbs 3:5-8:

Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.

      (especially this!):

Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD and depart from evil. It will be health to your flesh and strength to your bones."

So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. (Isaiah 41:10 NIV)

Jesus looked at them and said, "With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible." (Matthew 19:26 NIV)

For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—comes not from the Father but from the world. The world and its desires pass away, but whoever does the will of God lives forever. (1 John 2:16 - 17 NIV)

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. (1 John 1:9 NIV)

Matthew 5:27-32 New American Bible, St. Joseph edition.

You have heard that it was said, 'you shall not commit adultery.' But I say to you, everyone who looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery with her in his heart. If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one of your members than to have your whole body thrown into Gehenna. And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut if off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one of your members than to have your whole body go into Gehenna. It was also said, 'whoever divorces his wife must give her a bill of divorce.' But I say to you, whoever divorces his wife (unless the marriage is unlawful) causes her to commit adultery, and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery.

These are verses that scare the ever loving crap out of me.

James 1: 14, 15... But every man is tempted, when he is drawn of his own lust, and enticed. Then when lust has conceived, it brings forth sin: and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death.

1 Cor. 6:9... Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites,

      [h=3]1 Corinthians 6:19-20
      [/h]English Standard Version (ESV)

19 Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, 20 for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.
