paddingtonbear,
Out of a pure curiousity, what do you mean by the phrase "reformist jew"?
This question comes from an evangelical Christian, not having heard of this phrase before.
Thank you,
Daniel

Hi Dan, sorry ,it's probably a language issue. I think in the U.S reformist is known as "liberal". Basically there are two main branches of judaism....orthodox and reform (liberal) .

Ah. Very good, thank you for the education.
Within Christianity there are also characterizations of the various protestant denominations along the lines of Biblical inerrancy and orthodoxy/non-orthodoxy with respect to the doctrines of the historic Christian faith.
We may have those of the Jewish faith here but I do not know of any that have outwardly said so.
But here's their chance!,
Welcome to TTF,
Daniel

Daniel,
There are several branches with Judaism. The Reform, Conservative and Orthodox being the major movements. The Reform movement (mostly live in the USA) are more "liberal" and focus on the spiritual interpretation. They don't hold strictly to halacha (Jewish codified law). The Conservative movement is more strict in following the letter of the law but make exceptions for modern living. The Orthodox movement focus on maximizing holding to tradition and strictness of practice. There are some other minor movements within Judaism. Two others are the Reconstructionists and the Karaites. Reconstructionists focus on Judaism as a cultural entity. They accept halacha but focus on the importance of the collective cultural reason for it over "mere" adherence. The Karaites hold to only the scriptures (and mostly to the Books of Moses, the Pentateuch) and don't accept the Oral Law as binding. Hope that helps.
