Phil... excellent thread! Way to pick up on what PeterB wrote and run with it as I think it gets right to the heart and soul of what we're all trying to succeed at!

I'm 52yrs old and used to feel terrible when I MB'd and used P and often times tried to quit but to no long term success. So I agree with In Need Of Help when he says just will power is not enough. What made it enough for me was when my wife (Hopeful) found out and confronted me last year and I realized the harm that I caused her! I then painfully let go of the denial I was in and realized that I was an addict and since that day March 22, 2010 I vowed never to act out with MB & P again and I remain sober from it now and forever! Like Chas points out, "Phase 1" complete... sobriety and on to "Phase 2" changing who I was so I can become a better man... the one my wife Hopeful deserves and I intend to deliver! You are wise to cling to these guys who have demonstrated their strength and resolve from this addiction and moved on in a positive and successful way with their life... I find them inspiring and that's why I cling to them as well!

I like to call it "The Canoe Club" where we're all in the same waters paddling our ass off so we keep our relationships afloat and don't let ourselves sink backwards in that Fall of sobriety! ...new members certainly welcome and appreciated!

Most of all, I am just happy to be myself, with no need to be anything more. At peace and content. ~Mell

I like that! I certainly hope to be one of the success stories. I think I'm off to a good start, but I know it's only a start.

Rock..we are also the R.I.N.O. gang and not because of our appearance but because we adopted the Relapse Is Not (an) Option mantra. All are welcome to join, you just have to seriously adopt that mantra and quit using the word 'slip' in any context other than what I did this morning when taking the trash down our ice covered driveway (need to put about $10 in the hypothetical swearbox). 'Slip' implies something accidental or unforeseen and there is nothing unforeseen about a compulsive p user reusing if he hasn't got the right attitude, motivation, and plan to not use.

Mr. Blue (who is here every once in a blue moon) also tried to quit on his own periodically. But ever since THE TALK about all of what was happening, he has not looked at p.

The only things we call slips (in our relationship) are symptoms like moodiness, reflexive defensiveness, inattention. Those behaviors that can be very prevalent in a PA who is using which occasionally crop up with a recovered(ing) addict is going through other stuff.

The beautiful thing about true recovery is that even those things get better during phase 2 recovery.

Onward and upward, that's the way to go.
