      Default K-9 Filter & Facebook

Hey all, I hope that someone will be able to help me with this becasue I am only so-so with new computer programs. My BF installed K-9 on his computer & I have the password...we noticed that it blocks Facebook as a defalt. So this weekend, when we were together, I ok-ed that site. Two days later, K-9 is blocking it again. Since we have a long distance relationship at the moment, and Facebook has never been a trigger for him, it is one of the few ways we stay in touch and neither of us want to lose that! I get to see him again this weekend, but that will be it until I graduate, so I would really like to get this fixed now because otherwise we can't change it...I have the password, but we used his email (maybe silly, but it is working well otherwise so its ok!). If anyone has any tips, that would be AMAZING! Thanks!

Hi WL, even though you used his e-mail, you should still be able to go on the website and add FB on again, since you have the p/w.

I think I remember when we first started using K9, even though I had added FB to the list of ok sites, it took a few times of going back in and adding it again, before it stopped blocking. Occasionally, I will still get something blocked that is on the ok list, for whatever fluky reason. I just have to ok the site (again, sigh!).

Good luck, I hope you get this quirk ironed out!

When you first install K9, the settings that are default are very strict. You can go into the settings and block only certain types of content. One of the settings that you can allow is "social networking". That is totally up to you if you want to allow that option, whether it be facebook, myspace, etc.

And I hope you don't mind me sharing my experience with k9, and which email we attached to it. We used our own personal email account for it, which he has access to, and never realized the need for it to be anything other than that. And like you, only I knew the password to k9. (this was in the early stages of this roller coaster ride we've been on for quite awhile now)

UNTIL....one day, while checking our personal email while away from the house (loggin in through yahoo), I found an email from K9 which was generated because some certain someone clicked on "forgot password", which sends an email to the account attached with a new password. It was ironic that I just happened to log on to check emails right around the same time he was trying to get an email sent with a new password. I have since changed the email attached to k9 to one that I can only access while at work.

I highly suggest using an email account that he will not be able to access.

Thanks Charly, my BF was reading that over my shoulder, and he saw what you said. It scared us both, so he suggested that we change the email account right away so he won't get tempted. Honestly, we never even thought of that! Great advice. :)

      Facebook.

My secretary just got an I-phone, and hence set-up Facebook for the first time last weekend.

Her 16 year old son got on her phone and Facebook and saw MY honeymoon pictures. No, nothing is "showing" but it was our honeymoon.

Here's how she told me: She first shared with me (I wasn't sure why until she was done) that she was not putting any family or other pictures on Facebook (its how I keep in touch and share pix with my daughters and grandchildren!) because, even if she sets strict privacy settings, a "friend" can view and share the pictures. THEN she told me that her son had looked at MY pictures (I had just met him for the first time the previous week)! Hmmm . . .

      Good Lord!

I have erased MANY pictures from our Facebook pages! How naive am I that this NEVER crossed my mind!

Haven't read all of the posts, so this might of been mentioned already. If so, I apologize. If you use the Default settings, than your K9 is going to be very strict. I have found that even if you put Facebook on the exception list, having k9 on default mode will still screw up facebook. What I found personally, is that it would let you log in to Facebook, but it would block so much of facebook that it made it pretty much unusable. I downgraded to the level below default, and it works fine. Although, then k9 won't block social networking, meaning that your boyfriend will be able to access chat rooms :s. That is a quirk I found very annoying. Hope there is an answer soon.

So here is what we figured out, just in case anyone else has this question later on! First, we did decide to leave it on the "default" K-9 setting because it worked well for everything else. Second, I had to go in (because I have the password) and make Facebook an acceptable site for him to visit (it was blocked 100% before). After making it acceptable, it sometimes still blocks it, and this is what we discovered. Even if Facebook is ok, if an inappropriate ad pops up in the side bar, K-9 sees it and blocks the whole site. It will keep blocking it for a while, but after going back a few hours later those ads changed and he could access the site. It has ended up working well for us, even if Facebook is sometimes blocked. Totally worth the slight inconvenience in our opinion! Thanks for all the replies!
