I have three songs that I adore and listen to probably more than is healthy

'Wish you were here': Pink Floyd
'Hurt': Johnny Cash (But I also love the original by NIN)
'The Weeping Song': Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds

oh I have to put in a special mention to Split Enz....Songs like: 'History never repeats', 'one step ahead', 'I hope I never', and 'My mistake'. (Split Enz are musical geniuses).

Actually I could go on for hours... because I have to also give special mention to 'Baby I'm amazed' by Paul McCartney... his voice is so raw in that song....

I will quickly press the submit reply button so I stop adding more songs

Yeah I love "Wish you were here" and "Hurt", awesome songs!

Pink Floyd have got to be one of my favourite bands, and the great thing about them is that they were all amazing! There was the cool Syd Barrett era then the Dark Side and Wish you were Here era with Roger Waters being the dominant member then even when he left Floyd went on to realease Division Bell - a seriously awesome album!

I think I'm going to leave that there but I could go on. I also love Within Temptation! They are one of the best live bands now in my opinion.

Best wishes,

Ben

I'm a musician by occupation, over the years of doing that for a living I find I like silence best when not working heheh....
But when I do listen, I like metal and instrumental guitar stuff. Right now my top five would be:
Opeth
Buckethead
Children of Bodom
The Sword
Kings X

Really excited about the new Slipknot coming out later this summer

Hey all,

I am with Sheemie - I work in the music industry (both playing and my 'day job'), so sometimes silence is preferred if you do have the downtime!

I've recently discovered a really cool artist, Bon Iver. It's this guy who locked himself away in a cabin in Wisconsin for a few months and made this beautifully ethereal recording called "For Emma, Forever Ago". For those of you who dig the folky/ indie singer-songwriter stuff, check this guy out. Reminds me of Nick Drake.

'The best I can offer is teaching you to read guitar/bass tabs if you don't already know how.

I'm not sure it can really be taught as such, I do a bit of songwriting myself, the best advice I can give really is start off by writing new words to songs you know then make your own tunes and try to put words to them. There is really no set way to do it.

Sorry if that wasn't too helpful,

Ben

Lol. I guess my last post was not too specific. What I meant was that I wanted to learn songwriting, but I'm lacking a good, basic education in music. Like learning the notes and everything. Ya know, the stuff they teach you at school.

Hey Little Lock!

I am a songwriter/ composer (or try to be) and have been doing it for a long time on a semi-professional basis. I have an extensive background in theory, but I don't really apply that when writing a song. In other words, in my opinion, you don't have to be a Juliard graduate to be able to write a song. It's really an innate capability. If you can hear a melody you like, and find a way to translate that into sound (by voice, guitar, piano, etc), then you pretty much have all the tools you need. Paul McCartney or Dylan aren't "schooled" if you will... they just have innate knack to transform melody into song. I guess it's kinda like hitting a baseball at 100mph... some people can do it, and some just can't.

Theory and music education is always a good thing, especially if you don't have any sort of background in music at all. You can buy basic music theory books on the internet that are great for beginners. However, there are no rules to what you can or can't do when it comes to songwriting. Just ask the Beatles or Miles Davis!

Hope this helps -
Jimmy
