Default What are you reading or listening to right now or recently?

      Folks,

Call it "Long Term Strategy" if you like, or you could say you are finally living your life as it was supposed to be lived!

So how are we spending our free time (or theoretical free time for those with "young-uns" running around)?

      What are you reading lately?

      What are you listening to?

      I'll start:

Two books I've listend to in the last three weeks from an audiobook application:
      1. Robinson Crusoe (by Daniel Defoe, a must-read {or listen} if you've never done it)
      2. Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin
Currently listening to Treasure Island (by Robert Louis Stevenson). The origin of Long John Silver...

      I'm an avid reader.

Right now, I am reading 2 series.

The Stephanie Plum Numbers series by Janet Evanovich I'm up to book 15, including all the in-between the numbers novels.

      and

The Pendergast series by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child. I've read them all until the most recent.

I've also been re-reading some Crichton lately. Jurasic Park, State of Fear, Pirate Latitudes

Finished "Treasure Island", which was excellent. I never knew where Long John Silver originated before this!

Currently listening to: "A Short History of the United States" by Edward Channing, and "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes" by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle...

Picked up the '96 album by Fu Manchu, "In Search Of..."

It's OK, not as interesting as Kyuss...

      Daniel,

You need to see (If you haven't already..) Jeremy Brett as Holmes on the Granada DVD set. It's almost a given that Brett defined Holmes for all time and Granada went all for detail.
I've watched set over and over and never tire of seeing Holmes and Watson as well as all the villains come to life in period perfect settings.

Finished reading Mo Hayder's, The Birdman. Graphic and gruesome but none the less great detective fiction. Hayder plays to her strong hand, extensive forensic knowledge. Some of her characters are a bit weak but she'll put you on the edge of your chair with very strong plot action. Not for the faint of heart.

      Listening to:

Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac, The Box set. Early works but a great platform for Green's blistering blues licks. Nice slide work by Jeremy Spencer makes up for his rather lackluster vocals.

Also, 1974's, Live Stock, Roy Buchanan. Nicknamed, "The Worlds Best Unknown Guitar Player", Roy grinds out screaming riffs from his old Telecaster. His death was a huge loss to the music world and still remains somewhat of mystery.

Blend, by the BoDeans. One of their Mid-Western three chord rockers, these guys don't know how to produce a bad recording and in concert will bring the crowd to it's feet and keep them that way through the whole set.

Reading Caleb Carr's, The Alienist for the second time. His follow up to this story was very pale by comparison so I'm giving this page turner a reread.

Listening to Paulette Carlson's, It's About Time and Crystal Bowersox's, Farmers Daughter.

Never a fan of country music after it became glam/rock/country, I was getting tired of recycling my oldies and started looking at some of the folks in today's country scene and have been pleasantly surprised by what I'm finding and so I'm kind of in a country phase. Much of what I'm finding is fresh, fun and well performed. It also seems that the best studios, equipment and engineers are in Nashville and so the sound quality is way above average.

I've been getting into old-school English folk rock recently. Mainly Lindisfarne and Jethro Tull at the moment.

I'm reading the Silmarillion by JRR Tolkein.

      Best wishes,

      Ben
The world is in a constant conspiracy against the brave. It's the age-old struggle: the roar of the crowd on the one side, and the voice of your conscience on the other. - Douglas MacArthur

"'Thou mayest rule over sin,' Lee. That's it. I do not believe all men are destroyed. I can name you a dozen who were not, and they are the ones the world lives by. It is true of battles - only the winners are remembered. Surely most men are destroyed, but there are others who like pillars of fire guide frightened men through the darkness. 'Thou mayest!' What glory! It is true that we are weak and sick and quarrelsome, but if that is all we ever were we would, millenniums ago, have disappeared from the face of the earth. A few remnants of fossilised jawbone, some broken teeth in a strata of limestone, would be the only mark man would have left of his existance in the world. But the choice, Lee, the choice of winning!" - East of Eden by John Steinbeck

I just finished the book "Breathless" by Dean Koontz. My new favorite song is "Starry Night" by Chris August. =)
