Default Whats good on the Screen/TV

As i am writing this..i am preparing supper(I didn't have my dinner). Now i am thinking of watching some movies BUT how does a PA choose his movies, how do we tell what movie is ok or close to triggering a relapse? we can think "its ok..its a movie..it won't hurt" but very often, it is this false sense of security that leads us to relapse

What are the benchmarks of a movie should we set before its deem safe to watch?
"The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?"

Here is a site that will tell you the content and moral rating.

We have used it do decide what movies we feel we can watch.

IMDb.com also has summaries of the content of movies... it's a parental advisory guide, I think, but we use it when deciding if we're going to watch a movie or not.

We're finding it more and more difficult to find movies that are acceptable. TV is tricky, too, but it's a bit easier. Most of the time, based on the network and time of day that it airs, you can assume that it won't have anything too blatant.

Unfortunately, I think there is a little trial and error here, unless you want to go with a guideline like "G-rated movies only." We have watched a couple that, even after checking the content advisory, we thought would be fine, but ended up being problematic for H. So, we adjusted our guidelines and are being stricter about what we watch.

H likes educational shows, and those are often safe. Travel, history, architecture, engineering, etc.

There are some tv shows and some movies that you KNOW won't be safe, just by the description or title.

The MPAA rating system is a pretty good guide for movies:

      * Rated G: General Audiences — All ages admitted
      * Rated PG: Parental Guidance Suggested — Some material may not be suitable for children
      * Rated PG-13: Parents Strongly Cautioned — Some material may be inappropriate for children under 13
      * Rated R: Restricted — Under 17 requires accompanying parent or adult guardian
      * Rated NC-17: No children under 17 admitted

If you look up a movie, and see that it is rated NC-17, it probably is going to contain some strong, potentially triggering content. On the flip side, if you look up a movie and see that it has been rated G, it's probably quite safe to watch.

About "unrated": Some movies are unrated because the producers wanted to avoid a NC-17 rating (bad for box office revenues). A lot of movies in their unrated versions do contain racier content than the theatrical release. That being said, there are also some movies that were not rated before release for other reasons. You'll have to use your best judgment (and possibly online movie reviews) to determine whether an unrated movie is going to be suitable.

      Hi all!
I have found that we are much less inclined to watch TV at all these days and we haven't watched any movies either. In fact, for the past 6 months, we have barely watched anything at all. We tend to spend more time together and along with this site, we have found more important things to occupy our time. Much less time spent on mindless activities overall!

Our somewhat temporary solution to this has been to watch movies we would let the kids see. Though I gotta say, Mortal Kombat just seems kinda raunchy to me now... Sad, but true. lol

I haven't had TV feed in three years. I miss my sports but I don't like the idea of having to pay through the nose to watch what I choose. I don't want a, "Package" of junk I'll never watch.
I buy DVD's that I know I'll like and I'll watch over and over.
The Jeremy Brett Sherlock Holmes is an example. I have all of the decent versions of Jane Austen's works, same with the Dickens' works.
A lot of other UK mystery shows, and some short lived and quirky shows such as, Wonderfalls, Dead Like Me, and Arrested Development. I do like and own all of the seasons of, 30 Rock and I have a slew of military movies.
I've dropped off all of the other sites on which I had been active and this is the only one I visit anymore. I play chess on the computer but it's not as much fun as playing against a person. One tends to rush your moves like you were playing checkers and you don't have the ability to use your "head" game against the computer.
When I had TV feed other than sports, I'd watch programs on PBS. The last commercial series I watched start to finish was, Hill Street Blues.

It's not so, no problem lasts forever."
