Default Impulse control - 05-22-2008, 05:10 PM
I recently ran across something that has helped me. One of my problems is that I am in an office with high speed internet access and a closed door doing work all day. Sure, I could leave the door open but in the past it has been simply too easy to close it.

What I've wanted is a means of blocking those P sites that I used to frequent. I've avoided discussing this with the IT person for obvious reasons and have avoided installing blocking software for fear of damaging the office system.

I located an article on "Yahoo Answers" responding to the question "How can I block selected sites in internet explorer?" Those of you who are more computer savvy than I will understand when I say that it has to do with editing the Windows HOSTS file with notepad. It has worked. Now, when I type in a P site url I get the Windows error page.

I can certainly undo this but it would take time to locate the HOSTS file and do all the deletions and get back to "acting out." This is all the time I need to let the impulse pass and get back to my senses. There is probably a quick and easy way around this that takes less time but I don't want to know about it. In this instance, ignorance is bliss or at least preferred.

Offered in the hope that it may help someone else.

Please feel free to add to this thread with Strategies that have worked for you. Please keep it as brief as possible, so that it can be maintained as a quick bullet point reference type read. If an individual post stands out to you hear, please add your thanks by clicking the "thanks" button as opposed to creating apost to say thank you.

This is more of a distraction than a strategy

If, like me, you find that boredom is a big trigger but you are at a loss for what to do try this site:

There tons of thing to make on there, diy, electronics, food, games, car stuff.

For me:

+ thinking abt the progress i've made thus far and whether i'd be willing to throw it away just for a moments pleasure
+ willing to throw away the feeling of happiness i've been feeling thus far and fall back wallowing in depression
+Coming to this site and keeping up to date with my journal and checking the sober calculator, watching my sober heartbeats calm me down...
+ just thinking that P & MB is not an option anymore for me to escape to and that i want my freaking life back!

Also theres this book i posted about and i haven really given it a shot.. and i'll let you guys know how it goes if i get it.. Heres the link anyway : The 'P' Trap

  • FIRST LINE OF DEFENSE: Thoughts: consciously kick thoughts out if needed, focus on something else to make it happen, Pray
  • Stand up and remove myself from the room or environment -PHYSICALLY LEAVE THE COMPUTER
  • If I can't/won't/don't want to leave the computer, realize how much could be lost if I failed; really come to grips with the consequences
  • Go to TTF!
