      Default International Intimacy Disorder Association

I just read a quick news story about General Mills pulling a Yoplait yogurt commercial due to pressure from the National Eating Disorders Association. I am glad this association exists, but until today, I did not know of its existence. But apparently, they have muscle, and they are able to exert positive influence for the rights of those suffering from an eating disorder. The ad sent the message that even if you are thin, you may not be “thin enough”, hence encouraging an eating disorder to begin or re-emerge. I am encouraged by the existence of this association and its positive power.

I have read at times how some therapists are using the term “intimacy disorder” to describe SA, b/c it is a more “comfortable” term. There are those in the mental health community who now use the term “mood disorder” to describe depression, bipolar, schizophrenia, and the like – b/c it is more comfortable for some than the term “mental illness”. My support group does not like the term “mental illness”, and that is where I first learned the term “mood disorder”. I don’t mind either one myself, but I respect those who are more comfortable with one than the other.

My main point in bringing all this up is that perhaps one day, there could exist a “National Intimacy Disorder Association”. Perhaps this association would one day have the muscle and the power to get ads pulled for positive reasons, in an effort to protect others who might be negatively influenced, such as how the ad got pulled today.

I don’t generally like to mention an idea I have, unless I am willing to do what it takes to make my idea materialize. But I don’t feel I am the right person to get such an association off the ground. I don't have the skills to get such a thing started; but I do have some of the skills needed to be one of the workers behind the scenes. I don’t even know if forming such an association is realistic or if it would be influential. I guess all things are possible, though, right?

So in theory, I think my idea is a good one. In reality, I don’t know if it could happen in the intended way. It would take an awful lot of manpower and womanpower to pull it off. I think Rosie should be the President or CEO. And I guess if we are involving people from different countries, we’d have to call it, “The International Intimacy Disorder Association”. But international implies much more power and influence, doesn’t it?

Please don’t mistake me. I am not at all about power. But I am about “empowerment”, and such an association could provide just that.

Before on this site, we discussed steps that could be taken to help/prevent SA. One idea was for search engines to have a Surgeon General warning display when p terms are searched for. There were a lot of other good ideas, too.

I love this idea. As all of us know, the problems and the need for such an organization are real. I would be willing to do my part to help this get up and off the ground. I think it will be like an avalanche: starting with a snowball and picking more and more mass and force as it goes forward!

For a legitimate organization to come into existence, it will require significant planning and leadership. I also love your nomination of Rosie as a leader, but do not wish to discourage anyone who is willing to step up as well!

I know that this will require more than the forces of TTF alone and there are plenty of others whom we can reach out to, and invite to join us: Other support groups, doctors, and religious groups (provided there is no discrimination), equality movements, just to name a few.

This is such a great idea TS! Maybe an organization like this would be enough to start to wake people up? Lets see what sort of support we can get here and work from there!

RockIn, I agree, I would not want to discourage anyone else who wanted to step up to the plate!

      Any takers?

I know, but I've been hoping she still visits behind the scenes to read, and that she will see this thread...

I think this is a really good idea that we shouldn't give up on, but I am concerned that this would be hard to do without input from more members. How do we get this started? Do we have any entrepreneurs or business types that know what they are doing?

I'm bumping this up. This really is a great idea. Also, I have a diploma in business management and a certification in book keeping, if that helps in anyway :)

Unfortunately, like cigarettes, my ex-B/F would ignore the warnings altogether and just go along his merry way. I think that, after a while, the warnings aren't even read, they're just lines, part of the decorative package.

Just my thoughts... (sorry, I'm pretty jaded right now.)
