I just read a quick news story about General Mills pulling a Yoplait yogurt commercial due to pressure from the National Eating Disorders Association. I am glad this association exists, but until today, I did not know of its existence. But apparently, they have muscle, and they are able to exert positive influence for the rights of those suffering from an eating disorder. The ad sent the message that even if you are thin, you may not be “thin enough”, hence encouraging an eating disorder to begin or re-emerge. I am encouraged by the existence of this association and its positive power.
I have read at times how some therapists are using the term “intimacy disorder” to describe SA, b/c it is a more “comfortable” term. There are those in the mental health community who now use the term “mood disorder” to describe depression, bipolar, schizophrenia, and the like – b/c it is more comfortable for some than the term “mental illness”. My support group does not like the term “mental illness”, and that is where I first learned the term “mood disorder”. I don’t mind either one myself, but I respect those who are more comfortable with one than the other.
My main point in bringing all this up is that perhaps one day, there could exist a “National Intimacy Disorder Association”. Perhaps this association would one day have the muscle and the power to get ads pulled for positive reasons, in an effort to protect others who might be negatively influenced, such as how the ad got pulled today.
I don’t generally like to mention an idea I have, unless I am willing to do what it takes to make my idea materialize. But I don’t feel I am the right person to get such an association off the ground. I don't have the skills to get such a thing started; but I do have some of the skills needed to be one of the workers behind the scenes. I don’t even know if forming such an association is realistic or if it would be influential. I guess all things are possible, though, right?
So in theory, I think my idea is a good one. In reality, I don’t know if it could happen in the intended way. It would take an awful lot of manpower and womanpower to pull it off. I think Rosie should be the President or CEO. And I guess if we are involving people from different countries, we’d have to call it, “The International Intimacy Disorder Association”. But international implies much more power and influence, doesn’t it?
Please don’t mistake me. I am not at all about power. But I am about “empowerment”, and such an association could provide just that.
