Yes. Above all don't resist these thoughts directly. That just makes them stronger. The more you think about not thinking about them, the more energy you pour into them.
Instead, find something else to occupy your mind. Could be anything: a video game, a movie, a good book, music, whatever. Your mind can't think of two things at the same time. If you concentrate on something else, these other thoughts will whither and die from neglect. They may come back later, of course, but just keep doing the same thing, and eventually they'll quit bothering you.

What kind of thoughts? Are you talking about thoughts that are trying to convince you that P is ok?
If it is this kind of thought, I find that the best thing to do is to watch them and label them. So instead of falling inside the train of thoughts, you are rather watching them as an observer, learning what kind of tricks they are playing on you.
If you find that you cannot watch them as an observer, but there is a danger of falling inside the train of thoughts, then get out of the house.
I find that the more you learn about the mechanism of the urges and the kind of tricks they play on you in your mind, the less power they have over you.

Excellent advice by Phil on how the brain can only concentrate on one thing at a time and IWDT on how to identify your enemy.
You guys are truly helpful. God bless.
