Default Looking for info on K-9.

I've heard so much about K9.

I'm interested in downloading it, but I'd love to hear users unbiased opinions on it.

Pros? Cons? Ease of use? Ease of getting around it? Anything else I should know?

Do you use it alone, or is it better with another program as well?

Any information would be most helpful!

      Thanks so much!

AG and I use K9. I think it's pretty substantial and, with control over the admin login, I can check logs at any given time. I've run into a few snags running it on Windows Vista and have yet to try it on Windows 7, but it runs like a champ on our Windows XP machines.

I use it with Norton on my home PC and laptop and with McAfee on work PCs although I find I have never really needed the parental controls that come with the AV software while running K9.

IMO, it's easy to use, easy to configure and for a free program offers some nice flexibility.

      Peace,
      ~C~

Thank you! That's excellent to know, and I'm thrilled to hear words like "substantial" in your review. Do you happen to know if it can be checked remotely? It won't be a major problem if it can't, it just would be nice if it could be.

I think I'll give it a try, and install a decent keylogger as well.

I understand there is a way to have the reports emailed to the administrator. That being said, I never set up that feature as I prefer to have log access at my fingertips and log in in front of AG to view history. That way he knew I was lookin,g and when, and could see clearly what I was seeing. No secrets on either side. Plus, I prefered not to be blindsided via email, just in case. :D Never a concern though as it worked like a champ.

      Peace,
      ~C~

Well, in my case, it'll be not on sonoma's comp... but the kidlet's netbook.

Email logs would just be handier as far as that goes. No big deal though. I'm old, wise, and far too treacherous to be defeated by lack of remote access. Bathroom breaks, yard work, and school days would be perfectly opportune times to check it.

Go for it. I'll be interested to hear your take on the remote reports! Give us some feedback once you have tried it.

I do some crafty stuff now and then, and I think I'm going to install it on my computer too.

Its crazy what comes up on image searches for random things. I personally don't need it to hold me accountable for my browsing unless DIY sites, craft sites and garden planners are an issue. If that's the case, just tell me to stop conjuring up ideas for electroluminescent wire, and I'll stop. Honest.

I want it so that I don't have as many surprises while searching images. I'm still wishing for eye bleach after looking up innocent (I THOUGHT!) images for a small gift I made for sonoma.

If EL wire was shocking, don't even get me started on vermiculture as a kitchen waste disposal method! And when I start talking flea bite dermatitis.... make sure the kids are out of the room! There's no need for that kind of talk around minors!

Seriously, the stuff I look up on the net is highly nerdy, usually involving environmental science, ecology, biology, dog skin conditions, how to do certain home repairs/renovations, history, the use of the Oxford comma or crochet instructions. Yep, racy stuff. The amount of completely unrelated explicit sites and images that come up in searches for these things is ridiculous.

I'm not super-sensitive, but I really don't appreciate having explicit images just pop up. It's a very unwelcome surprise, and it makes me nervous to be looking up something completely innocent while my daughter is in the room.

I wish "eye bleach" was mine, but I think I heard it somewhere. I really do think something like that needs to exist-- to be able to un-see something would be fantastic, and I think all of us in this forum could benefit from that.

      Sonomette,

"I'm not super-sensitive, but I really don't appreciate having explicit images just pop up. It's a very unwelcome surprise, and it makes me nervous to be looking up something completely innocent while my daughter is in the room."

I began a thread here, around May, in which I asked if other SOs here, were beginning to see p type things everywhere they looked.

I never noticed or paid attention to the covers on magazines, honest, I'd glance quickly to see who was on it, sometimes thinking how it didn't really look like her or wondering what had been painted in or painted out of the photo, and then I;d skim the articles & features. ( best summer movies, if Jenn is adopting, latest health craze...etc )

Before p happened, I'd flick past the racy tv commercials, not really paying any attention to them, and once in a while, I'd think what a foolish way to sell a car or a deoderant brand to men. I'd just laugh it off as a marketing ploy targeted at youthful gullibility.

BF (before porn ) and AF (after porn ) Totally different perceptions.

After porn, I now see, stare and react to magazine covers. A mixture of interest, curiosity and irritation. How dare they flaunt this right here at the food check-out !!

I now get irritated by the commercials of women chasing a man into the elevator to tear his shirt off, because he is wearing a certain brand of deoderant
      ( begins with the letter A )

The point I am trying to make is, it was all there before (BP) and I never paid any attention to it. Now, I see it everywhere and I react to it. It has taken up residence in my head.

Very strange thing. I can't imagine how difficult this must be for a PA.
It's everywhere and once you react to it, or let it take on some importance or value, it just takes over.
